One part of this industry that I’ve grown quite fond of over the years, the line between being creative and technical abilities has slowly been blurring year over year, to the point I can’t even tell if there is one anymore.
What is Tech Art?
Tech art bridges artistry and technology in animation and game development. Tech artists are problem-solvers who ensure that creative visions translate into the digital realm. They are masters of optimization, pipeline development, shaders, and creative coding, tackling challenges like:
Creating tools and scripts: To streamline animation workflows and empower artists.
Optimizing assets: Ensuring smooth performance without sacrificing visual quality.
Developing shaders and materials: To achieve realistic or stylized visual effects.
Rigging and skinning characters: Enabling lifelike movement and expressions.
Troubleshooting technical issues: Resolving glitches and ensuring smooth production.
Is Tech Art Important for Creativity?
Tech art empowers artists to push the boundaries of their creativity. By providing efficient tools and optimized pipelines, tech artists free artists from technical constraints, allowing them to focus on their artistic vision. This fosters innovation and enables the creation of increasingly complex and visually stunning animations.
How to Get Started with Tech Art:
If you're intrigued by the intersection of art and technology, here's how to embark on your tech art journey:
Develop foundational skills: Build a strong understanding of art principles (design, color theory, composition) and technical skills (coding, scripting, 3D modeling).
Explore different software: Familiarize yourself with industry-standard software like Maya, Houdini, and Unreal Engine.
Learn scripting languages: Python is a popular choice for tech art, but other languages like C# and Mel are also valuable.
Build a portfolio: Create personal projects that showcase your technical and artistic skills.
Network and learn from others: Connect with other tech artists online and attend industry events.
Tech art is easily a dynamic and rewarding field that offers a unique blend of creativity and technical expertise. One could master the tools and techniques of tech art, and truly push the boundaries of animation.

Film Critique: Despicable Me 4
Overall = B-
Cinematography = B+
It is energetic and engaging, using dynamic camera movements and action-packed framing to keep things visually interesting. It effectively captures the humor and excitement of the minion antics and superhero battles but doesn't necessarily break new ground or establish a distinctive visual style for the film.
Animation = A
on par with what animation should be. No risk, no style, just good ol animation.
Art = B
The character designs are consistent with the franchise's signature style, with Gru, Lucy, and the girls retaining their familiar looks. The new villain, Maximus Le Mal, boasts a fun and quirky design, though his personality feels somewhat underdeveloped.
Story = C-
The plot follows a predictable trajectory, with Gru facing a new villain and ultimately saving the day. While there are some amusing subplots, the overall narrative lacks originality and surprises.
Writing = C-
This fourth installment in the franchise delivers exactly what you'd expect, minion-fueled chaos, heartwarming family moments, and a colorful adventure that's sure to entertain younger audiences.
It is easily forgettable, watched it once and don’t think I’ll ever pick up the film again. It is a decent entry in the franchise that will entertain families and fans of the series. However, it falls short of its predecessors in terms of originality, storytelling, and character development. While the animation and minion antics are enjoyable, the film lacks the spark and emotional resonance that made the earlier films so memorable.
